Description Perennial quaking grass (Briza media), also known as doddering dillies, is a charming but often overlooked semi-evergreen, perennial grass. It reaches 12 to 18 inches tall in bloom, with tiny, dangling, heart-shaped flowerheads that turn from silvery green to golden tan as they mature in early to midsummer. Fresh or dried, the locket-like heads are delightful addition to small fresh or dried bouquets. Or, you could leave the seedheads on the plants, in which case they might self-sow. Some sources describe this species as rhizomatous, which can be a scary quality in a grass. But others specify that the rhizomes are short, so that the plant basically grows in slowly expanding clumps rather than spreading like a menace, and the clumping habit is my own experience with it. I received the original seeds as B. media ‘Limouzi’, but as far as I can tell, the plants they produced are the same as the species. Full sun. Perennial; reportedly hardy in USDA Zones 4 to 8.
