Description Cannot ship this species to Oregon. If you’re always on the hunt for unusual annuals, summer pheasant’s eye (Adonis aestivalis) is an eye-catching species worth considering, with cupped, vivid red, dark-centered flowers over feathery, bright green leaves. In my southeastern PA garden, it flowers mainly in early summer; in cooler areas, or from a late-spring sowing, the show may not start until midsummer. Clipping off the spent flowers can extend the bloom season. Height in bloom is typically 12 to 18 inches (maybe 24 inches in ideal growing conditions). Do not plant summer pheasant’s eye where it may be eaten by people, pets, or livestock. Also, be aware that it is considered a weed in a number of western states (and currently considered invasive in Oregon), so you may want to skip this one if you live in that region. Full sun. Annual.
