Description Red chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia) is a suckering, deciduous shrub that generally reaches 6 to 10 feet tall. It produces a beautiful show of clustered white flowers in spring, later developing bright red fall berries (technically pomes) that linger through much or all of the winter. Sometimes, the red fruits are still there when the next bloom season begins. Its glossy leaves are bright green in summer, then develop rich red fall color. All together, that’s pretty much year-round interest. Plus, the fruits are edible–they taste awful raw (I tried a nibble) but apparently are delicious when cooked (as in jam or jellies, which I haven’t tried). Because of its suckering habit, red chokeberry might not be a great choice for a small mixed border, but it’s terrific for a larger yard. Consider growing it in a row as a deciduous hedge, or combine it with other natives—such as shrubby dogwoods (Cornus spp.) and viburnums (Viburnum spp.)—for a beautiful shrub border. Red chokeberry is native to much of the eastern half of North America. Full sun to light shade; prefers moist soil. Zones 4 to 8. 2025-collected seeds are sold out. I hope to collect again in late October 2026. At least 15 cleaned seeds. Unknown ecotype. Shipping to U.S. addresses only. Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
