Description Can one have too many columbines (Aquilegia)? No, not if you adore their intricate and elegant, late-spring to early-summer flowers. But yes, it is possible to have too many columbines if you’re trying to save seeds, because they can cross and produce variable offspring. Still, when a fellow gardener and blogger graciously offered to share seeds of a few of her favorites (thank you, Carol!), how could I resist? One was an exquisitely ruffled pale blue, matching the description of ‘Tower Light Blue’. Interestingly, it was pretty much identical to a columbine I grew from ‘Touchwood Supreme Mix’ seeds many years ago, and Touchwood did have ‘Tower Light Blue’ in their collection around the same time, so maybe the plants I had then and have now are the same, or very similar. Since I do have other columbines growing elsewhere here at Hayefield, there’s a possibility that these seeds may produce some off-type plants, and I’m reluctant to assign a particular name to this seed strain. Still, I do my best to keep my various columbines as far apart as possible, with lots of other plants in between, so the seeds should come at least mostly true, with frilly, light blue flowers on stems reaching 18 to 24 inches tall. Full sun to light shade. Perennial; Zones 3 to 9. 2025-collected seeds are sold out. I hope to collect again in July 2026. At least 15 seeds. Very limited quantity. Shipping to U.S. addresses only. Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
