Description The fluffy white flower heads of white snakeroot (Ageratina altissima, formerly Eupatorium rugosum) are a common sight in somewhat shaded areas starting in late summer to early fall and continuing even past frost. Native to the eastern half of North America, it grows in bushy clumps that usually reach 2 to 3 feet tall. White snakeroot can self-sow freely into empty spaces between other plants, so it may not be a good choice for highly managed gardens (with well-spaced plants and lots of bare soil or mulch), but it’s a great filler if you have a lot of room and would like to add fall flowers to a shady spot. These seeds are from wild plants growing here at Hayefield in Bucks County, PA. Partial shade; prefers soil that is on the moist side but is adaptable. Perennial; Zones 3 to 9.
