Allium canadense (Meadow Garlic) [12 Bulblets]

Description Cannot ship this species to Maryland, Michigan, or New Jersey. There are several plants known as wild garlic or wild onion, so I prefer to use the name meadow garlic for Allium canadense. The clump-forming plants have the typical slender, grass-like, aromatic foliage: hardly noticeable among meadow grasses unless you happen to step on it and release the oniony smell. The “buds” (bract-enclosed heads) are noticeable, though, as are the clusters of tiny bulbils, particularly when they produce their scattered white to pink blooms in mid to late spring atop the 1- to 2-foot tall stems. The plants go dormant in midsummer, then reappear in fall. Meadow garlic is not a traffic-stopper, to be sure, but it’s interesting. The species is native (to many parts of the eastern half of North America), and all parts of the plant are edible (if you’re not allergic to onions or garlic), so it’s also a great choice for a “food forest” or permaculture planting. I have never seen the flowers produce true seeds here; as with regular garlic, the top-set bulblets can be used for propagation. The bulblets you’ll receive are from plants growing in my meadow in Bucks County, PA. Full sun to light shade; average soil. Perennial; Zones 3 to 9. 2025-collected bulblets are sold out. I hope to collect again in June 2026. At least 12 bulblets. Shipping to U.S. addresses (except in MD, MI, and NJ) only. Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
