Description Garlic chives (Allium tuberosum) does double-duty in the garden, as a showy, late-season perennial flower and a source of tasty greens and edible flowers too. Its leaves are flatter than those of common chives (A. schoenoprasum) and have more of a garlic than onion flavor, but they are equally useful in the kitchen. The starry white flowers, which appear in clusters in late summer to early fall, have a light, sweet scent but also a light garlic flavor. In leaf, the clumps reach about 1 foot; the flowering stems can reach 12 to 18 inches tall. Full sun to light shade. Perennial; Zones 3 to 9. As much as I adore this versatile perennial, I have to warn you that it can self-sow readily if you do not shear off the flowering stems as soon as the flowers are done.
