Description Commonly known as smooth alder, hazel alder, or tag alder. Suckering deciduous shrub or small tree with glossy, deep green leaves; up to around 15 feet tall. Monoecious (separate male and female flowers on the same plant). Blooms in early to mid spring: yellow-brown male flowers are drooping catkins, reddish female flowers are in short, upright clusters that turn into dark “cones” by fall. Nitrogen-fixing. Native to eastern North America. These seeds are from wild plants growing here, in Bucks County, PA. Full sun to light shade; best in moist to wet soil. Zones 4 to 9. Collected in early October 2025.
