Germination Information: If you want to give your plants an extra-early start or have control over their exact placement, you could start the seeds indoors in mid- to late spring: sow 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep in pots or deep cell packs in a warm, bright place. It’s usually easier to just sow them directly where you want them to grow, though, in late spring to early summer, and then thin them to stand about 1 foot apart. Plants from direct-sown seeds tend to get taller than transplants, in my experience. If you allow the heads to mature in the garden, you will find self-sown seedlings the following year.
