Germination Information: One option is surface-sowing in mid fall to mid winter, setting the container then outside for germination in the spring. (I started my plants using the winter-sowing technique: Seeds I sowed on January 1 began sprouting on April 13.) Like many other warm-season meadow grasses, this species can germinate in warm conditions, but the results tend to be best after at least 6 months of dry storage. Since I collected these seeds in October, that would mean leaving them in the packet and waiting until around May or later to sow indoors or out. You could try sooner, if you wish, but the germination rate may be low if you try starting them warm too soon. When I sowed indoors, under lights, on February 23, the first seedling didn’t appear until March 16. Since no more popped up right away, I put the pot outside on March 21, and it took until May 1 for more seedlings to emerge. Transplant the seedlings (in groups) to individual pots when they’re 1 to 2 inches tall. Use groups of 6 to 10 or so if you want bigger clumps faster, or 3 or 4 per pot if you want a larger number of starter plants. Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive. Please read the description as well before ordering.
