Description If you’re looking for an excellent groundcover for a difficult, dry site, plantain-leaved pussytoes (Antennaria plantaginifolia) is definitely worth considering. It starts out as a rosette of relatively broad, green leaves covered with short, silvery gray hairs, then sends out above-ground runners (stolons) in all directions, eventually forming dense, evergreen (actually evergray) carpets of foliage around 3 inches tall. In spring, slender bloom stems rise to 8 to 12 inches, topped with clusters of white to pinkish white blooms. Male and female flowers appear on different plants. The foliage provides a food source for the larvae of the American painted lady butterfly (Vanessa virginiensis), and the flowers attract a variety of pollinators. The species is native to much of the eastern half of the United States; these seeds are from wild plants growing here at Hayefield, in Bucks County, PA. Full sun to partial shade; average, well-drained to dry soil. Perennial; Zones 3 to 8. Collected in mid to late May 2025. At least 20 (tiny!) seeds. PA ecotype. Shipping to U.S. addresses only. Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
