Germination Information: For the easy approach, sprinkle these seeds over bare (un-mulched) ground in a bed or border. I like to do this in late summer to late winter so rain and snow can settle the seeds onto the soil surface, and they can germinate whenever they are ready. Sowing in spring to midsummer can work too, though some of the seeds may not sprout until fall or the following year. Keep in mind that this sort of sowing is somewhat imprecise—some seeds may end up in less-than-ideal spots or get washed away—but there are plenty to play with in this packet. Even if you get only a few plants, you’ll then get lots of seeds from those to scatter around, and you could have all of the columbines you want in just a few years! If you wish to have more control over your columbines, you could start these seeds in pots—surface-sow (do not cover them)—in late fall to late winter. Set them outdoors in a spot protected from mice so they can get a natural chilling period and then germinate when conditions are right in spring. (The winter-sowing technique can work well for these seeds.) If you sow after February, consider giving the pot an artificial chilling period of about a month. It is possible that these seeds could germinate if you sow them indoors under lights in spring, or outdoors in summer. But if you try that and no seedlings appear within a month or so, then try the artificial chilling period before moving them back to a bright place.
