Aquilegia vulgaris ex double purple (Columbine) [25 Seeds]

Description Single-flowered columbines (Aquilegia) are so intricate and elegant, it’s hard to think of a way—or a reason—to “improve” them. We gardeners are always on the quest for something different, though, so it’s not surprising that the ridiculously frilly “Barlow”-type columbines have their fans. For a while, I was growing ‘Black Barlow’, with near-black blooms packed with narrow petals. Those plants fizzled out, though, so I bought a new batch of seeds to grow out, and I eagerly anticipated seeing the flowers. When they finally opened, I was at first disappointed to see that, though they were double, they weren’t the near-black of ‘Black Barlow’. The blooms were beautiful in their own right, though, in a rich, velvety purple hue, and since they were growing well away from my other columbines, I figure the color should come true, or mostly true, from these seeds. (There’s always the possibility that a few of the seedlings will be other colors.) I’ve also been impressed by the vigor of these plants, and their sturdy stems, and their good-looking foliage too. Height in bloom is typically 2 to 3 feet. Full sun to light shade. Perennial; Zones 3 to 9. Collected in early July 2025. At least 25 seeds. Shipping to U.S. addresses only. Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
