One option is to surface-sow them outdoors in fall through midwinter in a pot or milk jug (using the winter-sowing method) for germination in spring. Some sources say that increases the odds the plants will flower the first year; my winter-sowed seeds, however, waited until the second year to bloom. Other advice suggests starting the seeds indoors under lights in warm conditions in late winter to early spring, or outdoors in late spring to early summer. The seeds supposedly need a cold period of at least a month to sprout, but I have had luck starting them without the chilling period: surface-sown seeds planted on March 6 started germinating on March 12. Your experience may vary. If you allow seeds to form after flowering, the plants are likely to self-sow. Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive. Please read the description as well before ordering.
