Description My first encounter with this quirky squash (Cucurbita pepo) was over a decade ago, as “Yugoslavian finger fruit.” With a silly name like that, how could you resist trying it at least once? I ran across it again last year and was very disappointed to find out that the variety is correctly known as ‘Pineapple’, which is a boring and not at all memorable name. So, I’m using the correct botanical name here but will keep my favorite common name. It grows like any other vining squash—I’ve seen references to it being a bush type, but my plants produced vines that were easily 8 feet and still going when frost arrived—with hand-sized fruits that produce finger-like protrusions. They start out greenish white, turning pearly white, creamy white, and finally yellow when fully mature. They’re edible like a summer squash when young and still soft-skinned, but I like to let them mature on the plants and then use them for decorating: They’re a fun addition to the more usual fall gourds and pumpkins and may last until the winter holidays, even when left outdoors. Apparently, they’re also still edible (as a winter squash) when mature. Full sun. Annual. Collected in late October 2025. At least 12 seeds. Shipping to U.S. addresses only. Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
