Description It’s hard to beat sulfur cosmos (also known as orange cosmos) for brightly colored blooms! The loosely branched plants produce an abundance of clear orange flowers from midsummer to frost. Unlike the more commonly available compact strains of Cosmos sulphureus, these seeds consistently produce 4- to 6-foot-tall plants in my garden. They’re terrific as fillers in young perennial or mixed borders, or as a tall annual screen planting. They’re perfectly in scale with other tall annuals, such as ‘Hopi Red Dye’ amaranth (Amaranthus) and sunflowers (Helianthus annuus), and mingle beautifully with warm-season grasses. This species is native to Mexico; my original seeds came from a friend in Italy, who brought them back from his travels in Japan. Full sun. Annual. Collected in August and September 2025.
