Description Yellow fumewort (Corydalis flavula) is a dainty little species with deeply cut, blue-green to light green foliage and clusters of small, yellow flowers in early to mid spring, followed by reddish seedpods that are hidden under the leaves. The clump reaches 6 to 10 inches tall and wide in full bloom. After flowering, it declines quickly and is usually gone by early to mid June, but it will drop seeds before that. Self-sown seedlings usually appear in late summer to early fall, then overwinter as small plants. Yellow fumewort grows happily in deciduous shade (sun in early to mid spring, then shade) with average to moist (but not soggy) soil. This species is native to many parts of the eastern half of the United States but isn’t especially abundant anywhere. Annual (technically a winter annual). Collected in mid May 2025.
