Cuphea ‘Purple Mystery’ (Purple Cuphea) [15 Seeds]

Description Many years ago, I received seeds that were labeled as Cuphea viscosissima, and I had grown and distributed them as such. More recently, after discussions with two customers who really know their stuff, I found out that this is not the true C. viscosissima—the main clue being that the flowers are rather larger than those of the species. It may be a hybrid between C. viscosissima and C. lanceolata, or it may not be. All I know is that is purple, and it is a mystery. I was considering dropping it from the shop, but I enjoy growing it and have heard from others who have appreciated it over the years, so I’m now offering it under the name ‘Purple Mystery’. (I do now grow the true species as well; if that’s what you’re looking for, you can find it here: Cuphea viscosissima (Blue Waxweed).) Full sun to light shade. It is an annual, but it tends to self-sow, so you can enjoy it for years from just one planting. I’ll note two other things about this plant. One: The stems and leaves of this plant are very sticky, so you may not want to put it right next to a path or garden bench. And two: By late summer, the plants can get pretty tall (up to about 3 feet) and rangy, but if you cut them back by about half in late July or early August, they will look fresher for fall. Just watch out for any bees that might be trapped by the stickiness when you’re handling the trimmings. Collected in August and September 2025. At least 15 seeds. Shipping to U.S. addresses only. Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
