Germination Information: Start the seeds indoors—surface sown, or barely covered—under lights in warm conditions in early to mid-spring. Be aware that germination might be slow and erratic. (I usually see the first sprouts about a week after sowing on a heat mat under lights, with more over the next 2 to 3 weeks, and sometimes some additional seedlings appear a month or more after sowing.) Set the seedlings out after all danger of frost has passed. The seedlings have solid-green leaves; the reddish markings develop in summer.
