Description Commonly known as Job’s tears, this intriguing grass bears strappy green leaves on upright to arching stems that typically reach 3 to 4 feet tall. Nodding green flowers mature into large, bead-like green seeds that ripen to white, black, or shades of gray. (The colors vary a bit from year to year, so the seeds you receive may be lighter or darker than those in the photo here.) This plant has been grown for millennia and has many fascinating uses: as an edible grain, as a medicinal plant, as a natural bead for crafting, and as a garden ornamental. Full sun. Perennial in Zones 9 and south; can be grown as an annual anywhere. Be aware that Job’s tears may self-sow: usually lightly in cold climates but more freely in warmer regions, possibly to the point of being invasive. These seeds are meant for planting.
