Description American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is a delight in the fall garden, with clusters of bright purple berries dotted along the slender stems, which arch under their weight. Earlier in the season (around early summer), this deciduous shrub produces rings of pink flowers around the base of the leaves. The foliage has some yellow-green fall color, but that’s not a key feature; when the leaves fall off, then the berries really shine—at least into early winter, or until they get picked off by hungry birds. Mature height is usually in the range of 3 to 6 feet. Flowers and fruits form on the current year’s growth, so you can prune the shrubs if spring to encourage a lower, denser shape, if needed. This species is native mostly to the southeastern United States. Full sun to partial shade; average to moist soil. Zones 4 to 9. Collected in late October 2025. At least 15 seeds. Unknown ecotype. Shipping to U.S. addresses only. Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
