Germination Information: I recommend these seeds only for gardeners who have experience with challenging seeds that may require some experimentation. There is a great deal of varying information on the best way to handle these seeds. Some advise pouring boiling water over them and soaking them for a day; some say to leave them in the boiling water for less than a minute before moving them to cool water for the rest of the soak; and some say to soak them overnight in tepid water. Then, some say to sow 1/4 inch deep in warm conditions while others recommend a chilling period of 1 to 3 months. It’s a miracle that anyone ever manages to get these seeds sprouted, isn’t it? And yet, the plants can self-sow, indicating that they somehow manage to germinate without fussing. Feel free to experiment with different protocols, if you like, and expect that sprouting may be slow and irregular with whatever route you choose. I started with purchased plants, so I haven’t yet started this species from seed myself. Based on my experience with a similar species, Callirhoe involucrata, I would recommend the winter-sowing approach if you are starting in late fall to mid winter. Note that this information will not be on the seed packet you receive. Please read the description as well before ordering.
