Description American hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana) is a deciduous, understory tree that typically reaches 25 to 30 feet tall. One distinctive feature of this species is its smooth, rippled, gray bark, which gives it another of its common names: musclewood. Male and female flowers are produced separately, in catkins, on the same plant. They’re not showy, but female catkins develop into interesting, winged structures, where you’ll find the seeds. The fall color tends to be showy shades of yellows, oranges, and reds. Native to eastern North America; these seeds are from wild plants growing here in Bucks County, PA. Ideal conditions are partial shade and moist soil. Zones 3 to 9. Collected in early October 2025. At least 15 seeds. PA ecotype. Shipping to U.S. addresses only.
