Description Honestly, there isn’t anything rare or exciting about common woodland sedge (Carex blanda): it is indeed common, ordinary, unremarkable—yeah, even bland. Native to many parts of the eastern and central Unites States, it grows throughout the meadow areas here at Hayefield, in Bucks County, PA. When I first noticed it popping up in my borders too, I pulled it out as a weed. Eventually, though, I realized that this evergreen, cool-season sedge is actually serving a valuable purpose, creating a light to medium green groundcover to about 1 foot tall early in the growing season to cover the bare soil. It is easy for tall perennials to come up through the sedge, the layered look of the borders is quite nice, and there is some winter presence too. The foliage is useful to native insects, and some birds feed on the seeds, so it has wildlife value as well. I’m now happy to see it and realize that other folks who value native sedges might also appreciate it. Common woodland sedge prefers partial shade and moist soil but is adaptable. Perennial; Zones 3 to 9. Collected in early June 2025. At least 20 seeds. PA ecotype. Shipping to U.S. addresses only. Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
