Description There are many different sedges growing in the meadows here at Hayefield, and I have a goal of learning to identify at least one new one each year. I noticed a patch of this distinctive sedge for the first time this spring, and with the help of the Seek app, I discovered that it is graceful sedge (Carex gracillima). That’s a beautifully appropriate name, considering its elegantly nodding spring seedheads. The roughly vase-shaped plants are about 2 feet tall and basically clump-forming, but they have short rhizomes, so they can expand slowly. The species is native to much of the eastern half of North America; these seeds are from my wild plants in Bucks County, PA. Partial shade is usually best (my plants are in an open meadow but shaded in the afternoon by some eastern red cedars); moist to wet soil is preferred. Consider graceful sedge for cool-season interest in a wet meadow, rain garden, or shaded creek or pond edge. Perennial; Zones 3 to 9. Collected in early to mid June 2025. At least 20 seeds.
