Description Beaked panicum (Coleataenia anceps [formerly Panicum anceps]) is a rhizomatous, warm-season grass with with relatively broad, medium green leaves that may be tinged with some red or purple. Also known as beaked panic grass, it produces panicles of barely noticeable flowers in early to midsummer, developing seeds in mid to late summer. Height is generally 2 to 3 feet, possibly 4 feet. This is not a grass I’d recommend for a garden setting, because it’s not showy (though it is interesting), and because it can spread by rhizomes (not really a problem in a meadow or other wild area). I’ve noticed this grass in my Bucks County, PA, meadow for several years and finally got around to identifying it this summer. Apparently it’s at the northern extent of its range up here; it’s mostly native to the mid-Atlantic and southeastern states. Here, it has settled mostly in two spots—one is dryish and in full sun and one is on the moist side with just a half-day of sun—so it seems pretty adaptable. Perennial; I’m guessing the range is something like Zones 5 to 9. Collected in late July and early August 2025. At least 25 seeds. PA ecotype. Shipping to U.S. addresses only. Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
