Germination Information: One option is to surface-sow—do not cover—the seeds in fall to mid winter, setting them outdoors in a spot protected from mice so they can get a natural chilling period and then germinate when conditions are right in spring. (The winter-sowing approach can work well for these seeds.) Just keep in mind that plants grown this way will produce some flowers the first year, then usually overwinter and bloom more abundantly in their second year. Another option is to start the seeds indoors, in warm, moist, bright conditions in early spring. (Seeds I started this way on March 18 began sprouting on March 21; your experience may vary.) This approach generally gives the best first-year blooms, but I find that the plants sometimes flower so much that they don’t put much energy into making the roots they need to make it through the winter. If you can bear it, cutting off the flowers after late summer can encourage basal growth and give a better chance of overwintering. Or, let the seeds form and look for self-sown seedlings the next year. Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive. Please read the description as well before ordering.
