Germination Information: I recommend these seeds for experienced seed-starters only, because they may take some patience and experimentation. It’s possible to start these seeds indoors, in individual pots, but since they won’t flower until the second year, I suggest saving your indoor space for other seeds and starting these outdoors in spring or summer, either in pots or directly where you’d like them to grow. Some sources recommend planting the circular seeds on their edge, but I have tried it that way and did not notice any difference. I usually just sow them flat and cover with about 1/8 inch of growing medium. A heat mat isn’t necessary; in fact, the seeds tend to germinate better without supplemental warmth. Sometimes the seeds sprout in just a few weeks, but if yours are in pots and no seedlings appear after about 4 weeks, consider giving them an artificial chilling period of about 6 weeks before moving them back to a bright place. Or, take the easy route and sow in fall or winter outdoors, giving them a natural chilling period. Once you get the plant to flower and produce seed, it’s likely to self-sow.
