Description If you like the look of common sweet cicely (Myrrhis odorata) but would prefer to grow a native version, or if you’d like to add something a little different to your shade garden or woodland planting, give aniseroot (Osmorhiza longistylis) a try. This species grows in clumps of ferny, deep green, compound leaves, sending up 2-foot stems that are topped with umbels of tiny white flowers in early summer, much to the delight of many small pollinating insects. The common name aniseroot (as well as sweet cicely, sweet anise, and sweetroot) refers to the licorice-like fragrance of the roots, which have historically been used medicinally. The leaves have a similar fragrance when rubbed or crushed, and the roots, leaves, flowers, and seeds are considered to be edible. Aniseroot is also a host plant for the larvae of black swallowtail butterflies (Papilio polyxenes). The species is native to much of the eastern half of North America; these seeds are from cultivated plants I grew from seeds collected on a shady roadside near here, in Bucks County, PA. Partial to full shade. Perennial; Zones 3 to 8. 2025-collected seeds are sold out. I hope to collect again in mid to late July 2026. At least 10 seeds. Very limited supply. Shipping to U.S. addresses only. Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
