Description Woolly rosette grass (Dichanthelium acuminatum) is a tufted perennial grass with green foliage—usually quite hairy on the leaf undersides and the parts that wrap around the stem—and airy, branching panicles of greenish to purplish spikelets in late spring to early summer, followed by rounded seeds. Later in the growing season, it produces branching stems and usually flowers again; you may not notice the flowers, but the tufts of leaves along the stems (which mostly hide the short late-summer or fall inflorescence) are distinctive. Height in bloom is usually in the 2- to 3-foot range. This is not a showy grass that will star in an ornamental border (though it does look good in masses), but it has a pretty, hazy appearance during its first flush of bloom. Also known as woolly panic grass, woolly rosette grass has value as a host plant for various butterflies and a food source for many other insects and wild birds. Consider it if you are looking for a relatively low, clump-forming grass in a naturalistic garden, or in a meadow or wildlife planting. The species is native to many parts of North America; these seeds are from plants that grow wild in my meadow in Bucks County, PA. Full sun; average to moist soil. Perennial; Zones 3 to 9. Collected in early July 2025. At least 25 seeds. PA ecotype. Shipping to U.S. addresses only. Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
