Description This one was new for me in 2025, acquired as a seed gift labeled “pot luck.” What a joy to watch the tiny (for a sunflower) seed develop into a sturdy seedling and then a magnificent garden plant. It grew with a single stem to nearly 6 feet before it produced its first flower in early August…and then more and more and more blooms. I imagine it would still be flowering if we hadn’t had a freeze—and if it hadn’t gotten toppled by the gales of November. I see many references give the height of this species as 6 feet, but it was easily 9 feet here by the end of the growing season, and that was even with transplanting. The flowers are on the small side (4 to 5 inches across) but such a lovely bright yellow and so abundant that they made a spectacular show. The goldfinches had a blast riding the nodding seedheads that I couldn’t reach to protect with collection bags. And oh, of course, the lovely silver leaves, which would make this plant worth growing just as a summer foliage accent. Silverleaf sunflower is native to Texas. Full sun. Annual. Collected in September and October 2025. At least 15 seeds. Shipping to U.S. addresses only. Please read the germination information as well before ordering.
