Germination Information: Honestly, you’re better off buying started plants of American holly, if you can find them, because the seeds can be slow to germinate. Plus, it takes several years for seedlings to reach flowering size, and you won’t know which are males and which are females until then. Still, trying to grow American holly from seed can be a worthwhile adventure if you’re willing to be patient. Sow the seeds about 1/4 inch deep in fall to early winter, in a pot or a nursery bed, and then wait. They generally need a warm-cold-warm cycle to germinate, which basically means a summer, fall/winter, and then spring/summer: in other words, look for seedlings the second (or possibly even the third) year after sowing. If you want to try to speed up the process, you could try putting the pot in a plastic bag and giving it alternating warm (room temperature) and cold (refrigerator) periods—around 3 months in each—until seedlings appear. Note that this information will not appear on the seed packet you receive. Please read the description as well before ordering.
