Germination Information: Because there’s conflicting information out there about how best to germinate this species, I’d recommend these only for experienced seed-sowers who are willing to experiment. Though I haven’t yet tried it myself, I assume cold-season sowing would work for this species, as it does for other bush clovers: Plant the seeds (surface sown, or with a very light covering) in a pot in fall to midwinter, setting them outdoors in a spot protected from mice so they can get a natural chilling period and then germinate when conditions are right in the first or second spring. (The winter-sowing approach would likely work well with this species too.) Hulling the seeds, and possibly soaking overnight before sowing, could be worth trying. Though everything I’ve read says that a chilling period of at least a couple weeks is necessary, I can say from first-hand experience that warm sowing is an option too, particularly if you remove the hulls, then nick and soak the seeds overnight before planting to allow water to get into the hard seed coat. Seeds I started that way on March 5 began sprouting on March 7; your experience may vary. The seedlings were slow-growing when small but picked up in summer and managed to flower at about 1 foot tall in their first year. Be aware that the seeds are small and nicking them can be tricky; I usually use nail clippers, but rubbing the seeds between sheets of sandpaper would probably work too.
